Planet Bioplastics is a partner of the three-years research and innovation project ECOFUNCO “ECO sustainable multiFUNctional biobased COatings with enhanced performance and end-of-life options” (starting date 1st of May 2019), funded under Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme) with a consortium of 17 institutions from eight countries, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Israel, United Kingdom, Turkey and Croatia.

The aim of the project is the selection, extraction and functionalization of molecules (proteins, polysaccharides, cutin) from highly available and low valorised agro-food by-products (biomass such as tomato, legumes, sunflower etc.), to develop innovative bio-based coating for paper and bioplastic packaging with improved performances compared to currently available products and, at the same time, with more sustainable end-of-life options.
